He was born on 16 July 1921 in La Rochelle, France, and passed away on 17 February 1989 in Paris.
Surprisingly, Laroche began his career as a milliner. In 1955, he visited the USA to explore new methods of "custom-made" production. In 1957, he established his own fashion house in Paris and created his first haute couture collection for women, designed as practical clothing. In it, he reintroduced vibrant colours such as pink, orange, coral, topaz, and turquoise. The collection was very well received.
By nature and demeanour, he was known as a humble and kind designer, in contrast to the haughty nature of most Parisian designers.
In 1961, he settled on Avenue Montaigne and introduced the first prêt-à-porter collection for women under the Laroche Diffusion brand. As a costume designer, he also collaborated on costumes for films. In the 1970s, in collaboration with L'Oréal, he began selling perfumes under the names Drakkar Noir for men and Fidji for women.
He was also one of the first European designers to create models for the American market.
After his death in 1989, other designers such as Angelo Tarlazzi, Michel Klein, Alber Elbaz, and Marcel Marongiu took up the baton of the world-famous Guy Laroche brand.
Guy Laroche was and will remain a living legend of Parisian haute couture.
As a pioneer of prêt-à-porter design, he brought a revolution to French fashion in the 1950s, characterised by subtle and comfortable elegance, excellent colour combinations, and high technical standards.
His collection of sunglasses and optical frames for men and women is the result of this long-standing tradition, which combines the latest trends with the refinement and discretion that distinguish the Guy Laroche style from others.
